Air Conditioning Heater Control Switch Anatomy 71 72 73 Classic Ford Mustang. Today I am restoring and cleaning up the old air conditioning controls. These controls are very common in earlier Ford vehicles and tend to bind up and become corroded. In my restoration, I fully disassembled the unit and cleaned, sanded, and painted the air conditioning controls. I used a stainless steel (cast finish) type paint on the metals. The knobs were a royal pain to get off and don’t just slide or pull off like many of the forums claim. I needed to drill the tops of the plastic knobs through to hollow out the centers and I gently pried them off with pliers. Be careful not to twist and yank on the knobs, they WILL break off the white metal air conditioning shaft slides. If you need to purchase a used air conditioning heater control unit, you could pay anywhere between $80 and $ 150. To the best of my knowledge, they do not re-manufacture these units, so you will need to pick one up on ebay or in your local yard.
